High-waisted jeans are a silhouette that really only entered my closet within the past year or so. I had seen them around on blogs, magazines and social media for a while and had assumed that as a petite woman they just wouldn’t work for my body. I figured one needed to be long and lean to get a flattering effect from the style. It turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong. I bought two high-waist pairs from Urban Outfitters last year, a black denim and a blue distressed denim, and have worn each of them countless times since. I love the way the style enhances feminine curves, highlights a small waist and makes legs look miles long, even on a petite gal like me!

The high-waisted style has been around for while, but what makes a pair look truly modern is the shape of the leg as it fits downward towards the ankles. To avoid the hippie look, go for straight leg and skinny fits vs. a flare or bootleg.

A key styling tip for your high-waisted jeans is the absolute necessity of the shirt tuck. A full tuck will provide a more polished look while a half tuck in the front lends a casual-cool vibe. There is one instance where a tuck is not required and that is for cropped top styles. High-waisted jeans will be your best friends with these silhouettes as they perfectly showcase the jeans with no midriff flashing circa 1995.

If you have yet to dip your toes into the high-waist pool, I recommend easing in with a black skinny leg pair. The dark color is uber-flattering and a fitted leg is consistent with jean trends over the past few years so you shouldn’t feel too out of your comfort zone. I especially love pairing mine with a chunky sweater and slip on mules for an easy wear anywhere look. These jeans will also transition perfectly into the cooler weather for winter with a great pair of boots.
