Spring Vintage Re-Designs
Lately I have been on the hunt for more vintage items that I can re-work into modern and wearable silhouettes for spring and summer. The reason I like to do this instead of just buying new fabric is for the great prints that vintage items often have. Rich colors, bold prints and beautiful materials just don't get produced anymore like they used to.
If you guys follow me on Instagram (@emilykfarina) then you may have seen my posts this past Saturday when I stopped by my favorite East Village vintage shop, No Relation Vintage. I got four new printed dresses that I am so super excited about! Each is a little bit different, all are full of personality and charm. Today I wanted to share a bit about how I pick vintage pieces and what I have planned for ones I just bought this weekend.
First off, how I pick vintage for re-design - when I go to buy vintage with the intent to re-design it there are few key elements that I always keep top of mind that help me navigate a sometimes overwhelming amount of options:
- Print - I'm always looking for florals and plaids, anything that catches my eye and feels fresh. This usually is just a gut feeling for prints that speak to me for one reason or another.
- Size - Since I often will be cutting up the piece and using the fabric for a new design, I need to be able to get enough yardage from the original. This is when the L and XL dresses are perfect. Anything too small means limited options for re-design.
- Fabric Quality - Many times I have found a gorgeous pattern only to realize it is printed on a terrible polyester. That is a deal-breaker for me, if the quality of the fabric is bad it's an automatic no-go.
Once I have the pieces, I hang them all up and just let the creative ideas come to me. For the new dresses I just got this weekend I have a few ideas in mind. I have been wanting a floral bustier in the style of Brock Collection and the new yellow floral will be perfect for that silhouette. Dark florals are one of my favorite looks for spring, I have a flirty long sleeve mini dress in mind for the dress on the far left. Lastly, I am really into knotted sashes and braided belts right now, so those elements will definitely be worked into at least a few of these pieces. I am so excited about these pieces, I cannot wait to get started on them. I will definitely be sharing once they are finished!
