Apple Picking in Julian, CA

Last weekend we headed up to Julian for a day of fall festivities. We planned to go apple picking last year but ended up going too late in the season and all the apples were already gone. Knowing this, we arranged our day trip to pick some apples nice and early in the season.

Julian is a little over an hour drive from our house so it was easy to go up just for the day. When we left our place it was sunny and 70’s but as we made our way up the mountains the temperature dropped to the 50’s and misty clouds rolled in. It was like going to a totally different world from sunny San Diego. While it was a little damp, the cooler weather was perfect for getting into the fall spirit.

Julian is a small town that started as a gold mining location. Today it is best known for it’s apples and other various entertainment events. Apart from the apple orchards, Julian has a cute main street full of shops, restaurants and bnbs. One of the must-visit spots on the main street is Julian Pie Company. You can get a fresh slice of pie with ice cream and enjoy it on their patio or you can get a full pie to-go. The line for the dine-in has been long both times we visited so we’ve opted to get a full pie to bring home. The dutch apple pie does not disappoint and is the best pie I’ve ever eaten - yea it’s that good. We ended up buying two to bring home this year! So in addition to our apple picking haul we had plenty of fall treats for the two of us.

We had a great day just exploring around and relishing the feeling of fall. We stopped by Nickel Brewery, a cozy little bar and tasted some of their local beers - I sipped a few, Jeff enjoyed the rest. All in all we had a great time and highly recommend a trip up to Julian for anyone in San Diego or those coming to visit! Just make sure you get some pie!
