Dressing stylishly in the cold months is hard. Yes, you can wear cute things for when you’re inside. But living in a city like New York where we don’t drive cars around, we spend a lot time outdoors walking places. It becomes infinitely more important to have a stylish coat since that oftentimes is the only thing that is seen. I have amassed a decent collection of coats over the years in red, black and camel. But I wanted to add a few more statement coats to my rotation this season. Since winter coats can easily set you back a couple hundred a piece (if not more), I wanted to find an alternative option that would be easier on my bank account.
I’ve spoken about Shein a few times on my blog before, but if you are not familiar with the brand it is fast-fashion online retailer (think along the lines of Forever21 and H&M). While I am all for investing in quality pieces that can last a lifetime, I also appreciate the place a cheap trendy piece can serve in one’s wardrobe. I took a look through Shein’s site to see if they had any affordable coat options and lucky for me that had a bunch!
Let me provide a few disclaimers up front regarding Shein – the products are stupid cheap, so don’t expect amazing quality. If cashmere yarns, detailed finishings and immaculate fits matter to you, this isn’t the brand you’ll want to check out. But if you are like me and can overlook some cost-friendly substitutions, there are some amazing pieces to be found on Shein. This navy plaid coat was one of the pieces I decided to scoop up when hunting for affordable coats – at only $43 I couldn’t resist giving it a try. Seeing how long the coat was on a tall model on the site, I knew this was going to need some alterations for my small frame. I chopped about six inches off the hem and two inches off the sleeve and arrived at the fit seen in the photos. I love the longer length, both from a style and warmth perspective and the plaid pattern is unique but also subtle enough to be wearable.
I don’t know the last time I wore a beret, but after seeing them around everywhere this fall and winter I wanted to revisit the look. Jeff actually had a navy beret he was given as a gift years ago, which paired perfectly with this navy coat. Un verre du vin quelqu’un? If you are looking to up your coat game without investing too heavily I’ve included some great options below from Shein, also check out my recent post on Pastel Colored Coats for some vibrant options well!
