Vintage Floral Dress

Emily Farina May 2, 2018

dress : vintage, similar // jacket : old, similar // bag : Coach, similar // sneakers : Superga // sunglasses : Ray-Ban

Last weekend Jeff and I trekked out to The Big Reuse in Brooklyn to hunt for some "found objects" to use as decoration at our wedding. We are going with an industrial vibe for the decor so vintage items work really well, also they are unique and cheap = win, win. We had some great spring weather and I jumped at the chance to wear one of my new vintage dresses.

When I bought this dress it was down to my mid-calves and had some terrible 80's sleeves. I really liked the idea of keeping the long sleeves but decided they needed a little help. I narrowed the shoulder seam and added some elastic to the sleeve hem. I also chopped the length off to be a mini instead of midi. I left the rest of the dress as is, using a belt to blouse up on the bodice a bit. Since this retro floral print can skew a bit matronly, I wanted to style it in a way that was decidedly young - tossing on a leather jacket and pairing with sneakers did the trick.

I've officially become obsessed with vintage floral dresses this spring. I just went again to my local vintage store yesterday and got a few more finds. I can't stop! They are just so cheap I can't resist pushing my design skills and trying new things. I am so excited to share more of them with you guys as they are perfect for spring and summer.

I bought these black Superga sneakers a couple of years ago now and the longer I've had them the more I like them. I find the black color to be so versatile and they are comfortable too. I have my eye on the white pair as a great option for summer as well.

Whether you're into vintage or not, a dark ground floral dress is a pretty solid investment into your spring wardrobe. These styles can be paired with flats for work, heels for dinner or sneakers for kicking it around town like me. I've included links to some of my favorites below.

Is it travel time yet? Ready for another adventure ✈️
It is so important to me that pieces in my wardrobe can do double or triple duty rather than serve only one type of occasion. The garments I design for Magill are no exception. I want anything I design and sell to earn their keep in my customers’ wardrobes rather than just take up space for those once-in-a-while events. One of my favorite Magill pieces, the Denes Dress, is a dark floral midi dress and perfect for both warm and cold weather. Today on Fizz and Fade I’m sharing two ways to style this dress both for now and later with items you probably already have in your closet - www.fizzandfade.com
How hard is it to grow peonies? Thinking I may try my hand at adding some to our yard this spring. We have lemons, plenty of herbs and veggies in the works. How hard could peonies be? 🤷🏻‍♀️
It’s a cliche saying “a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear” but it’s so true for so many of us. We reach for the same pieces exclusively and never wear others. Then each season we convince ourselves we need more clothes so we can wear the current trends and round out our wardrobes. I definitely feel this way, so I was super intrigued by the idea of “shopping your closet”, a trending concept. The idea is you ‘shop’ your closet to create new looks vs. going out and buying more. I recently took this idea to heart and re-organized my wardrobe to exclusively feature my current picks - ultimately I was trying to create the feel of a favorite boutique and the clothes I wanted to be selecting from each day. Turns out I had a lot of awesome pieces already, no buying required. Check out my latest post on Fizz and Fade for my approach and tips to try this out yourself!

I’ve found time and time again that I reach for similar pieces in my closet. Blouses with a flattering v neckline and long sleeves always top my list of most-work items. You just can’t beat the versatility. This top is one of those pieces I selfishly designed for my own closet #mifteblouse #magillclothing #uoonyou
You guys can clearly see from my feed that I am obsessed with prints, specifically floral patterned pieces. While a bright or white ground floral can look too summery for winter, a black ground floral is perfect for adding a happy touch to cold-weather blahs. I’m partial to the ditsy/small print versions and rounded up a handful of options (all with sleeves!) that would be great additions to your winter wardrobe. Can I spend the weekend here please? We are trying to play some golf tomorrow but it looks like potential rain in San Diego 🙄. But I’ll take it over snow ❄️ any day.
Who wants to spend extra money on designer sunglasses? Not me! I’m laying out a whole bunch of budget-friendly sunglasses on Fizz and Fade today, all under $30! Now that price I can handle 😎. @liketoknow.it #liketkit http://liketk.it/2zMTK
Looking forward to the weekend 👀 already.
